About Commodore Joshua Barney’s Regiment
The Commodore Joshua Barney’s 36th and 38th District Regiment is a newly formed living History/Reenactment unit portraying US Regular Militia and Navy forces during the Battle of Bladensburg War of 1812 in the District of Columbia. The Regiment is currently recruiting federal employees to volunteer as reactors to. Our goal as a Regiment is to help broaden the public's, and our own, knowledge and understanding of the causes and impact of the War of 1812 with a focus on the Battle of Bladensburg and the Burning of Washington in the District of Columbia. Washington, D.C. War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission members have attended Living History programs in the District. The Regiments goal is to promote the accurate and authentic portrayal of US Soldiers during the Federalist and Early Republican Era. Membership is open to all individuals wishing to portray this period of U.S. history and broaden their knowledge of the period. All though we mainly focus on the infantry arm of the US forces, members wishing to portray other branches are encouraged to do so. Individuals wishing to portray civilian life of the period are welcomed and needed to add that perspective to our impression. Members younger than 16 are able to participate with appropriate adult supervision. In June 1812, the U.S. Army, a key component of the U.S. Armed Forces at the Battle of Bladensburg in the War of 1812 expanded the army from seven regular infantry regiments to twenty-five as authorized by the Declaration of War. Recruiting was done by state, each regiment being raised from a single state. The 17th was the second Kentucky regiment, the other being the 7th, raised in 1808.
